Backing makes it too thick.
The plastic backing glued onto the back makes the plate too thick. The screws need to be an eighth of an inch longer. Also, if there is a dimmer switch the thick plate keeps you from pushing the dimmer on and off. I took off the plastic back (easy to do) and it all worked fine. Not sure why there's a backing because the plate is sturdy without it and I've used metal switch plates for decades with no shock issue.
